Artist Interview

Short Artist Interview

Susan Johnson

Q: What is your favorite color?

A: My favorite Winsor Newton color is French Ultramarine Blue. It is my workhorse "blue".

Q: What do you like about Aquabord (a revolutionary watercolor substrate, I can tell you more in store)?

A: The surface is textured clay that absorbs water like watercolor paper yet the watercolors are much more vibrant than on paper. The boards are quick drying and portable and they don't buckle or tear.

Colors can be lifted back very easily to white. Can be framed without glass.

Q: Do you have any Pointers for using Aquabord?

A: Need to flush the board first before painting. This is done by wetting the surface thoroughly with water. You can paint layers of color but you must let each layer dry before painting the next layer on.

Colors can be lifted easily to the layer of color underneath by using a stiff brush.

Q: What is your most used medium when you create your art?

A: Watercolor is my primary medium and water mixable oils is my secondary medium.

Q: Tell me a little more about yourself?

A: I have been painting with watercolors for 20+ years. But art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child I used to save up my money to buy the paint by numbers art kits. I always loved to paint even though I never took an art class until I was 45. I have always been creative in one form or another. I have sewn quilts for many years and I used to make stained glass windows. Then I took a watercolor class from Dawn McLeod Heim and fell hopelessly in love with the medium. I love trying out new products, brushes & paints for watercolor. And I enjoy taking workshops from other artists because I always learn something and get inspired.

Q: What inspires you?

A: I always get inspiration for my paintings from nature. I am an avid gardener and my garden always inspires me. I also love to hike, kayak & travel so I am always inspired by what I see and experience.
